Geometric Problems in Cartographic Networks

چکیده
It is my wish to start giving my deepest thanks to my supervisor Marc van Kreveld and my promotor Mark Overmars. I am also very grateful to Mark de Berg, who also participated in my supervision in the beginning. Without trying it, you made me think that I was in the best place to do my thesis. I would also like to thank for taking part in the reading committee and giving comments. I would also like to thank the co-authors who directly participate in this thesis: I would also like to thank all the colleagues at the Institute that shared some time with me, and also those in Berlin. Han-Wen deserves special gratitude because he hardly complained after hearing the same song for the twentieth time. He also made that my PhD time would be more enjoyable and helped finishing this thesis with the samenvatting.

Methodology for Developing a Database of Geometric Patterns to Better Support On-the-fly Map Generalization
Cartographic generalization has been a research topic for more than thirty years. In spite of recent advances, a complete automation of this process still faces fundamental problems. Furthermore, recent needs such as web mapping and Spatial On-Line Analytical Processing (SOLAP) require geospatial data that are generated on-the-fly at any scale. This requires processing times and a degree of aut...
متن کاملB-spline Curve Fitting: Application to Cartographic Generalization of Maritime Lines
Generalization is the process of abstraction applied when the scale of a map is changed. It involves modifications of data in such a way that the data can be represented in a smaller space, while best preserving geometric as well as descriptive characteristics. A map is an abstracted model representing the geometric reality. The smaller the scale, the more schematic the representation. Line car...
متن کاملVisualisation of Semantic Networks and Ontologies Using AutoCAD
This paper presents a visualisation of the ASN and ontologies using AutoCAD. The geometric coordinates of nodes are based on the semantic distances. The whole semantic network or some selected parts are visualised on the screen, similar to a cartographic “map”. Per mouse click on some node, an application may be opened, which allows reading and modifying the attributes of the corresponding obje...
متن کاملThe Computational Complexity of CartographicLabel
We examine the computational complexity of cartographic label placement, a problem derived from the cartographer's task of placing text labels adjacent to map features in such a way as to minimize overlaps with other labels and map features. Cartographic label placement is one of the most time-consuming tasks in the production of maps. Consequently, several attempts have been made to automate t...
متن کاملSpatial Analysis in curved spaces with Non-Euclidean Geometry
The ultimate goal of spatial information, both as part of technology and as science, is to answer questions and issues related to space, place, and location. Therefore, geometry is widely used for description, storage, and analysis. Undoubtedly, one of the most essential features of spatial information is geometric features, and one of the most obvious types of analysis is the geometric type an...
متن کاملOn the Use of Dtp Scanners for Cartographic Applications
Scanners have been used as input devices in cartographic applications mainly for digitisation and eventually subsequent vectorisation of existing hardcopy maps. Other applications that can increasingly be found, particularly in relation to cartographic work within a GIS, make use of scanned images, especially aerial imagery, which are usually transformed into orthoimages and are subsequently us...
